Bulk results come back from TINCheck.com number coded. The IRS has a list of codes that each have their own meaning. Those codes and meanings are listed below. For the other lists, you will get a range of numbers. A zero or blank box means that there were no potential matches found on that list for that name. Any other number, for example a 6, means we found that many (6) potential matches. To get results that are more detailed on the lists you will need to run a manual validation. Located at the end of the document is a lists of header abbreviations and which lists that header corresponds too.

Opening The File in Excel

The bulk results that come back from TINCheck.com will open by default in Notepad. The below instructions explain how to open that file in Excel without dropping any leading zeros.

  • Open Excel -> File -> Open -> Choose “All Files” from the bottom right -> Select the CSV file

  • Ensure that data is formatted properly. Select Delimited -> My Data Has Headers

  • Select the Tab delimiter checkbox (this is the default)

  • Highlight all the fields (select the first field, scroll to the end, shift click on the last field) -> Select “Text” at the top. This will prevent leading zeroes from being dropped.
